Primary school headteachers and their deputies are set to receive significant salary increases in a move aimed at improving welfare and boosting morale within the education sector, particularly among arts teachers.

Under the new pay structure, headteachers’ salaries will rise from Shs980,000 to Shs1.5 million, while deputy headteachers will see their earnings increase from Shs780,000 to Shs1.3 million.

The adjustment is part of broader government efforts to address long-standing concerns over pay disparities in the public service, especially within the education ministry, where arts teachers have for years raised concerns about being left behind in previous salary enhancements.

Officials say the increment is intended not only to improve living conditions for school administrators but also to strengthen leadership at the primary school level. By enhancing the welfare of headteachers and their deputies, government hopes to improve school management, teacher motivation, and overall learning outcomes.

The move is also expected to ease tensions within the teaching profession, where salary differences between science and arts teachers have previously sparked dissatisfaction and calls for equitable pay.
