THE Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development, commonly known as 'Uongozi Institute' has been hailed for building the required capacity on leaders in the country.

The Speaker of Parliament, Ms Anne Makinda, made the remark during a public speaking training session held in Morogoro town over the weekend. "They are doing a good job... our leaders need such trainings," Ms Makinda told journalists.

She said that authorities will continue using the Institute for such trainings instead of sending them abroad, now and then, hence saving money. "They have the ability to run quality capacity building trainings, we support them," she said.

The two-day training saw 14 deputy ministers being trained on public speaking by facilitators from Uongozi Institute in collaboration with their counterparts from Westminster, United Kingdom.

The Chief Executive Officer of Uongozi Institute, Prof Joseph Semboja, said the course was part of leadership development programmes which were developed after the Institute opened doors.

"The ability to effectively communicate with the public is essential to successful leadership," he said, adding that the course focused on further strengthening and developing various competencies required in order for leaders to confidently speak in public and authoritatively respond to questions.

He explained that public speaking is very important especially for young and upcoming politicians. "It could be good if young politicians get trained on public speaking early enough, if allowed we are ready to do that," Prof. Semboja said, adding that the aim of his institute is to train all ministers in Tanzania.

He thanked facilitators for their hard working, commitment and experience; the things, he said, made the training a success. A facilitator from the UK based Westminster, Jacqueline Smith, told the ministers that better governance, better trained ministers mean a better deal for the people they are serving.

The Deputy Minister for Transport, Dr Charles Tizeba (MP), said they have learnt a lot from the training. The course covered various aspects of public speaking, including delivering a speech, analysing and internalising questions quickly before responding to them, and maintaining a logical thought pattern.

Uongozi Institute seeks to support African leaders to excel in their role of transforming society to realise Africa's development in a sustainable manner.
