Stigler gorge power project tender to be floated tomorrow

Dar es Salaam. Tender for the construction of a major hydro-electric power plant at Stigler’s Gorge along Rufiji River will be announced Wednesday, August 30.

This was said in Dar es Salaam on August 28 by the deputy Minister of Energy and Minerals, Dr Medrad Kalemani, after a meeting with President John Magufuli.

Dr Kalemani was part of a team of firms which implements a number of key infrastructure projects in the country who met President Magufuli.

Upon completion, the project is set to produce 2,100MW of electricity that will be added to the national grid and help to reduce power shortage in the country.

In the meeting, President Magufuli assured that the government has in hand fund for commencement of the power project.

Stigler’s Gorge is among the biggest projects whose implementation is on the pipeline. Other projects include construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza.

Meanwhile, President Magufuli on August 28 asked the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) not to hesitate from taking measures when they have evidence on corrupt people.

Dr Magufuli made the statement when he visited PCCB head offices.

“Many blunders have been made. We verified the agricultural inputs subsidy and found to have the phantom debt of Sh48 billion also there were 19,500 ghost workers, 56,000 unrealistic beneficiaries of the funds from Tasaf (Tanzania Social Action Fund),” he said.

He listed other we happened to have 5,850 ghost student who were lined up to benefit from the higher education student’s loans board, 11 seized train wagons at the Dar es Salaam Port and other dubious contracts.

“I want to see serious measures being taken against those involved,” he said.

He assured his support for PCCB and its staff and management. He said they were capable to tame corruption if they work professionally.

In the meeting, President Magufuli received various concerns from PCCB staffs and pledged to improve their working environment and remunerations.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of State at President’s Office, Public services Management and Good Government Ms Angela Kairuki, Permanent Secretary Dr Laurian Ndumbaro and PCCB Director General, Valentino Mlowola.
