A SIM card registration agent has been convicted and sentenced to one year in prison, with the option of paying a UGX 500,000 fine, after being found guilty of illegally registering a SIM card in violation of Uganda's SIM card registration laws.
According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the unlawfully registered SIM card was later used by fraudsters to swindle a student through a fake scholarship scheme, highlighting the risks posed by failure to follow the country's SIM registration procedures.
UCC said the conviction sends a strong message to all SIM card registration agents that compliance with the law is not optional. The regulator noted that proper SIM card registration plays a critical role in protecting consumers, supporting investigations, and preventing crimes committed through mobile communication.
The Commission urged all registration agents to strictly adhere to the established procedures, warning that anyone found violating the law will face legal consequences.
