A Sierra Leonean national who admitted to being in Kenya illegally was given a one-month jail sentence or a fine of Ksh. 50,000.

In his ruling, Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati mandated that Ms. Hawa Sam, an alien, be returned to her home country as soon as she paid the fine or served out her jail sentence.

The Sierra Leonean was accused of being illegally present in Kenya on or before April 16, 2026, at the Teleview area in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County, without a permit to justify her stay, in violation of section 53(1)(i) as read with section 53(2) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act.

Sam tickled the court in her defence by claiming that she forgot to renew her tourist visa because she fell in love with a Kenyan man while on vacation.

She begged the Presiding Magistrate to forgive her, vowing not to make the same error when she returned to the nation.

As proof that they were in a relationship, Ms. Sam called out the name of her Kenyan boyfriend and brought him before the court.
