Police in Mbale City are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a Senior Three student of Mbale High School, who was found hanging at her family home in what authorities suspect to be suicide.
The deceased has been identified as Catherine Nelima, a 16-year-old resident of Bukisukye Lower Cell in Bumutoto Ward, Industrial Division, Mbale City.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident is believed to have occurred on Tuesday, June 9, although the exact time of death has not yet been established.
Discovery by the mother
Police say the girl was at home with siblings after her mother, a businesswoman, left for work in the morning. When she returned home in the evening around 5pm, she reportedly found the other children in neighbouring homes before discovering Catherine unresponsive in her bedroom.
Police response
Officers from the homicide and scene of crime units were deployed to the scene and carried out initial examinations.
The body was later conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
Elgon Region Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities have urged parents, guardians, and schools to remain alert to the mental health and wellbeing of learners, stressing the importance of timely intervention where children show signs of distress.
Investigations are still ongoing as police await post-mortem results and continue to gather statements from relatives and community members.
