Rwanda's Food and Drugs Authority (RFDA) has temporarily suspended 10 alcoholic beverage brands imported from Uganda and ordered their immediate recall from the market over standards concerns.
The affected products are among 52 imported alcoholic beverages suspended from sale in Rwanda. Importers have been directed to recall the products from distributors and retailers and submit recall reports within three days or face further regulatory action.
The suspended Ugandan brands include Bond 7 Whisky (Uganda Brew Limited); Campfire Gin, X5 Gin, Jonney's Gin, X5 Liqueur, Pan Master Whisky and X5 Whisky (John Distillers Uganda Ltd); Club5 Gin and Tembo Liqueur (Glorrie Industries Ltd); and Gilbey's Flavoured Gin and V&A Imp Cr Lqr (Uganda Breweries Ltd).
In a notice dated August 5, the RFDA said it had immediately suspended the importation of the listed products and instructed importers to ensure all stock is withdrawn from the market.
The move comes days after Rwanda President Paul Kagame warned that excessive alcohol consumption was destroying the country's youth. Speaking at the Indangamirwa meeting on July 29, Kagame urged young people to avoid alcohol, saying it was derailing their ambitions and costing lives.
Following the President's remarks, the RFDA also shut down a dozen local alcohol manufacturing factories and prohibited the distribution of their products as part of efforts to protect public health.
Rwanda enforces strict alcohol control measures, requiring bars and nightclubs to close at 1:00 a.m. on weekdays and 2:00 a.m. on weekends.
