A Big Concern To Me
Why do we Christians use other people's misfortunes or predicaments as reason(s) to thank God?
Why do we need to thank God for life simply because others have died?
Why do we need to thank God for good health simply because others are in the hospital?
When a Christian is called to stand up in the church and pray, he or she will most likely pray like this:
"Thank you Lord for the gift of this new month. Thank you for my life. Many started this year with us, but they are dead. Many are sick in the hospital. But here am I, healthy and alive. It is not because I am worthy but because of your love for me."
Now let me ask, does it mean that those whom we are comparing ourselves with, (the dead, the sick), God does not love them?
Some will even take it further. . .
"I thank you Lord that I am not among those that don't have job. I thank you Lord that I am not among those that are barren. I thank you that I am not among those that were denied admission to school."
This is really giving me personal concern.
It is a new month and the last month of the year, providentially, it fell on a Sunday. You can be sure that almost all the churches during prayers today will definitely use other people's misfortune as a prayer point for thanksgiving. Sad!
Again, I also noticed that people don't get motivated to thank God unless you use other people's predicaments on them. I love what Chris Nwabueze said in one of his posts,
"You won't see me use tragedy or other people's predicament or ply into other people's situation in other to force you to be grateful for where you are now. Words like "You should thank God that you are alive because some started the year with you and now they are dead." You can thank God for your life without bringing dead people in it.
"I'm not going to show you the man with one eye so you can be moved to thank God for your two eyes.
Thanksgiving is a lifestyle, if you need to hear that a man broke his neck before you appreciate the Lord for keeping your neck in its position, it shows there's something terribly wrong with you."
Today as you pray, thank God for yourself and thank him for where you are today. Leave what you consider as other people's predicaments out of your prayers. If you had an accident and you were the only survivor, thank God and leave those stories of how God saved only you, how he loves you which invariably suggest that he does not love others that died. Be sensitive!
Happy new month!
