Nigeria President Umaru Yar'Adua 'has heart problem' ​



The president has had a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years​


Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has a heart condition, his spokesman has said, after he flew to Saudi Arabia on Monday for medical treatment.

Mr Yar'Adua has acute pericarditis, or inflammation of the lining around the heart, his spokesman told the BBC. ​

He said the president, 58, was responding well to treatment. Officials earlier denied rumours that the president was seriously ill. ​

Mr Yar'Adua has had a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years.
He has been unable to perform a number of official duties because of recurring health problems.​




At about 3pm Friday November 20, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed Muslim prayer, President Yar'Adua complained of a left-sided severe chest pain.​

President Yar'Adua has twice been flown to Germany for emergency treatment and it is the second time he has visited hospitals in Saudi Arabia.

He has refused to say exactly what condition he suffers from, and has repeatedly said in interviews that his life is "in the hands of God".

BBC health reporter Michelle Roberts says most cases of pericarditis clear up with rest and medication within a few weeks, although patients will initially need to be treated in hospital to check for complications.

Our reporter says occasionally pericarditis is triggered by cancer, which is something doctors need to check for.

Rarely patients may need surgery if the pressure around the heart becomes too great, a complication that could potentially be fatal, she adds.

Presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said the president felt pains after performing Friday prayers last week.

"At about 3pm Friday November 20, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed Muslim prayer, President Yar'Adua complained of a left-sided severe chest pain," he said, reports Reuters.

Mr Adeniyi said the initial diagnosis was pericarditis, which has since been confirmed.

Officials had earlier been quoted as saying the president intended to make the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca this week.

Analysts say his continued ill-health poses a problem for Nigeria's constitution.

If he were to step down or die, he would be replaced by Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, who is from the country's southern Niger Delta region.
But according to the ruling People's Democratic Party's own formula for sharing power among the country's regions, the president must be a northerner.

It is said that Yar'Adua never wanted to become president but rather he was thrust into it. Because of the divide in Nigeria the president had to come from the north and for reasons only known to the party & Obasanjo they chose Yar'Adua. This is why I've always been against this notion in Tanzania that when the president is from Tanzania mainland then the next one has to be from the Ilse and vice versa. This limits the country to picking a person from a certain region rather than the right person for the job.

I think it would be wise for Yar'Adua not to seek a second term. If he is wise he would tell his party leadership as soon as possible that he is not willing to run for a second term so that they can start making appropriate arrangements. This is because Nigeria political situation is very fragile with this whole north and south issue and if h were to die in office it will pose a great threat to national security. No body wants to play God or wish him harm but it's better to be safe than sorry. besides as an ex president he will get time to rest while still receiving all the medical attention of a national leader. It might even be better for him.

The man is the President of Nigeria for crying out loud.

Yaani mimi hapo ndo wananchi wenzangu wa Africa mnaniacha hoi..hivi ni nchi gani ya Africa..politics zake siyo fragile? Or when was the last time that Nigerian politics was not fragile?

Jamani..mi nadhani some times..haya maneno ya wazungu tusiyatumie..tutafute ya kwetu kuelezea matatizo yetu. By the way hii siyo criticism ya mkuu niliyemnukuu..ila naona ni tatizo letu wengi kutaka kuhalalisha maneno..wanayotumia CNN at al analyst..

Eti mtu..anakuja anakwambia..Sudan au Rwanda....kwa vile wamepigana sana na kuuana....wanahitaji "Truth and reconcilliation" commission.......Really? Do you really believe unaweza kuua baba yangu au mama yangu harafu ukaungama nikakusamehe, just as simple as that?? (as a policy of the country?).

I would rather go for a phrase like "truth and coexistence".......Kwamba tumekoseana..sasa tukae chini tujadili namna ya kuishi wote..maana we all need each other! Tunahitaji ku coexist amidist our differences..forget this western coined phrases....they take us nowhere..

Back to the mada, Yar`adua nadhani kweli ni mgonjwa..aamue tuu aachie ngazi come 2011-Inshallah. Tatizo watu wanaomzunguka wanataka kula..asipogombea watakosa..all benefits and privileges attending to the Presidency..

Africa we have a long way!

My friend you have made me laugh. That is because first you started out by for some reason being emotional over my use of the word fragile just because CNN uses it. So i should stop using a word which best describes a situation just because CNN has used it? Then you go to use an example of Rwanda which is very irrelevant especially since you were answering to my post. But at the end of the day what did you do? You said the same thing I pointed out which is that he should not run for presidency since he will receive all benefits and privileges of the office.
