The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) Council has withdrawn recognition of the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) with immediate effect, citing administrative and staffing deficiencies.In a statement issued on October 19, 2026, PSU Secretary Dr. Stephen Lutoti said the decision followed MUST’s failure to address concerns raised in an earlier notice, including the appointment of a non-pharmacist nurse to head the Department of Pharmacy in an acting capacity and an inadequate number of qualified teaching staff.
According to PSU, MUST was issued a notice on April 16 highlighting the concerns before receiving a formal Show Cause Notice on September 10, giving the university 30 days to explain why recognition of the programme should not be withdrawn.
Dr. Lutoti said the university failed to respond within the stipulated period, prompting the council to withdraw recognition during its 61st Emergency Council Meeting at Pharmacy House in Kyambogo.
The decision means PSU will not recognise qualifications for courses taught or assessed during the de-recognition period.
The council has also suspended the issuance of pharmacy student numbers, recognition of internship placements and eligibility for pre-internship and pre-registration qualifying examinations for new MUST pharmacy graduates.
Current students have been advised to seek transfers to other PSU-recognised universities or wait for the university to address the identified concerns.
PSU said a follow-up inspection will be conducted once MUST addresses the outstanding issues, with further action guided by the findings.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing professional standards and safeguarding the quality of pharmacy training in Uganda.
