DEFAULTING Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) customers have been given a month to settle their outstanding bills amounting to a total of 243bn/- countrywide or face exposure and legal action.
A statement issued yesterday by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Dar es Salaam yesterday said that they have agreed with Tanesco to publish the list of all power debtors and the amounts they owe the utility firm after a month.
After one month we will make public the name of the debtors and the amount they owe the power utility. Later on, we would take necessary measures, including legal action, the PCCB statement said.
The statement has come following a research conducted by PCCB on Tanesco operations in the country.
A number of issues surfaced in the research that were discussed between PCCB and Tanesco with the aim of plugging loopholes that might result in corruption to bring about efficiency and improve services, the statement said.
PCCB noted in the statement that there are both chronic debtors and ordinary debtors and among them there are government institutions and offices, parastatals, embassies, non-governmental organisations, religious organisations and political parties, industries and individuals.
The bureau appealed to customers to settle their bills promptly to enable Tanesco to run its activities efficiently.
