Pyongyang said all ties, including communications, would be cut
North Korea is to cut all relations with South Korea, Pyongyang's official news agency reports.
KCNA said the North was also expelling all South Korean workers from a jointly-run factory north of the border.
The move comes after an international report blamed North Korea for sinking a South Korean warship.
Pyongyang denies it torpedoed the Cheonan near the inter-Korean maritime border on 26 March, killing 46 sailors.
South Korea says it plans to refer North Korea to the UN Security Council, and is seeking a unified international response to the incident.
'Puppet army gangs'
Tuesday's KCNA reports announcing the severing of all ties - including communications - said the North was also banning South Korean ships and planes from its territorial waters and airspace.

Within a matter of days relations between the two Koreas have returned to the freezer.
The diplomatic goal now will be to ensure that a renewed cold war on the Korean peninsula does not generate into a hot conflict.
The United States is firmly backing South Korea but US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton - who has been in the Chinese capital Beijing as events unfolded - has failed to extract any public criticism of North Korea from the Chinese authorities.
Her hope will be that in private Beijing will tell Pyongyang in no uncertain terms that it should do nothing to inflame this crisis further.

"The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea... formally declares that from now on it will put into force the resolute measures to totally freeze the inter-Korean relations, totally abrogate the agreement on non-aggression between the North and the South and completely halt the inter-Korean cooperation," KCNA reported.
Pyongyang has also accused South Korea of trespassing in its waters.
In a warning to South Korea's navy, a newsreader on North Korean state television (KRT) said: "South Korean puppet army gangs have been recently trespassing our territorial waters without restraint.
"They have conducted provocative acts which severely irritate us, by making dozens of warships intrude upon our waters from 14 to 24 May."
The newsreader said that if this "deliberate provocation" continued, the North would "put into force practical military measures to defend its waters".
North and South Korea are technically still at war after the Korean conflict ended without an armistice in 1953.
While there were hopes of a reconciliation a few years ago, relations have been deteriorating since then and now appear to be at their lowest point in a decade, correspondents say.
Provocation
Amid the rising tensions, Seoul announced on Sunday it was ending trade relations with the North in response to the sinking of the Cheonan.
South Korea has also said it will drop propaganda leaflets into the North to tell people about the sinking, as well as setting up giant electronic billboards to flash messages.

It has resumed propaganda broadcasts to the North, playing radio programmes that will soon be broadcast via border loudspeakers.
The US, which has thousands of troops based in South Korea, has backed Seoul, condemning the incident and confirming late on Monday that it will hold joint anti-submarine naval exercises with South Korean forces.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the US and China must work together to "fashion an effective response" to the sinking of the Cheonan.
Speaking in Beijing, Mrs Clinton said maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula was "a shared responsibility" between the countries.
China has called for all sides to show restraint, adding its voice to calls for international co-operation over the incident.
Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said Beijing was "ready to work together with the US and other parties and continue to stay in close touch on the situation on the Korean peninsula".
On Tuesday Wu Dawei, China's special representative for Korean affairs, arrived in Seoul for talks with Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan.
Analysts say China's attitude is key, because it holds a veto in the Security Council and has in the past been reluctant to impose tough measures on Pyongyang.
Mrs Clinton is also due in Seoul for talks on Wednesday.

Mkuu, Korea ya kaskazini (and its allies) na korea ya kusini(and its allies) bado ziko vitani mpaka hivi leo.

Mimi naamini Wamarekani are not beyond sinking their ally's warship ili wapate pretext ya kuanzisha vita dhidi ya Korea ya Kaskazini?

"The international community must respond in the growing crisis over the sinking of a South Korean warship", the US says."

"There was an overwhelming evidence that North Korea was to blame".

Hakuishia hapo bali alisema:

"This was an unacceptable provocation by North Korea and the international community has a responsibility and a duty to respond,"

I stand to be corrected!

Marekani nayo imezidi sasa. Kaaazi kwelikweli.Haya sisi yetu macho.

yaani ulikuwa hujajua hilo mkuu. obama ni symbol tu, wanaoongoza nchi ni wengineeee

North Korea v South Korea: Fools rush in

Both North and South Korea have begun preparations for war in a week where relations between the two countries broke down to the worst they have been since the Korean War of 1950-53.

The latest confrontation came about when a South Korean navy ship was sunk by a torpedo on 26th March, killing 46 South Korean sailors.

North Korea is denying all responsibility for the sinking of the ship but the evidence is mounting to the contrary. A fleet of North Korean submarines left its port 2-3 days before the attack took place and investigators from five countries concluded that it was a North Korean torpedo that sank the warship.

In response, the South announced a series of reprisals including a trade cut-off and is seeking United Nations Security censure of the North, but for that to happen it needs to convince veto-wielding member China, an ally of North Korea, that the North was indeed responsible for the sinking of the ship.

Russia, which fought alongside the North during the Korean War, is demanding to see proof that it was responsible before it takes any action, a sensible approach all things considered. After all, what did we learn from the Iraq War? If you're planning to go in, make sure you can justify it. Seven years on we're still waiting for those weapons of mass destruction to turn up.

North Korea is hardly helping its own cause, mind, assuming peace is the country's preferential outcome. It this week threatened ‘all-out war' against the South if it breaches established water territories.

Something doesn't quite sit right about this to me. If North Korea wanted to secretly attack South Korea, why would it use torpedoes which could easily be identified as its own? And if it did in fact launch the torpedo, why would it bother denying it? North Korea, as we've seen in the past week, is not the most timid of countries, so it strikes me as strange that the latter could be the case.

The next week will be vital to the future of the Koreas, where China and Russia hold the key to the outcome. If China and Russia back North Korea as they have done in the past, it will give the North the confidence to take on the South and the United States, as it did in the Korean War. If China and/or Russia don't back North Korea (they are unlikely to back the South, but could remain impartial) then the North surely must desist with its aggressive stance or risk being wiped out.

China declines to accuse N Korea over torpedo

China on Sunday resisted international pressure to blame North Korea for sinking a South Korean warship, and instead called for restraint on the Korean peninsula.
Speaking in South Korea, Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, said China's main concern was stability following a March torpedo attack that sank the Cheonan warship, and claimed the lives of 46 South Korean sailors

The most urgent task now is to reduce the impact of the Cheonan incident to ease tensions and avoid a clash," Mr Wen told a news conference following a summit with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts.

South Korea, the US and Japan want China to take a strong public stance over the incident, which represented the deadliest North Korean attack on the south for more than two decades.

However, China says it has not concluded who was responsible for the attack. During the summit, Mr Wen gave no indication of how China would respond when the issue is brought to the United Nations Security Council.

South Korea and the US have provided China with technical details on the sinking and have offered further information. Seoul also says it is open to a visit from any Chinese technical team that may wish to inspect the shattered hull and corroded torpedo, which it says was fired from a North Korean submarine.

South Korean officials admitted before the summit they had little hope Beijing would publicly condemn its communist ally. Instead, they expected to begin talks aimed at persuading China not to veto a strong condemnation of North Korea at the Security Council.

While Seoul is leaving open the option of further sanctions, officials admit that North Korea is already so heavily sanctioned over its missile and nuclear weapon programmes that any further measures would have little practical effect.

On Friday, a South Korean government spokesman quoted Mr Wen as saying that Beijing would not protect "whoever sank the ship". However, Mr Wen did not strike such an encouraging tone for the South Koreans when he spoke directly himself.

Yukio Hatoyama, Japanese prime minister, has supported South Korea's assertive response to the sinking, calling the attack "provocative" and "unforgivable".

Mr Hatoyama has authorised a plan to restrict cash remittances to North Korea from ethnic Koreans in Japan, long an important source of foreign currency for Pyongyang. Japan will require travellers to North Korea to declare cash holdings exceeding Y100,000 ($1,110), down from the current Y300,000. Electronic remittances exceeding Y3m will also have to be declared, down from Y10m.
Japan has been seeking to increase economic pressure on North Korea since Pyongyang tested a nuclear weapon last May.

In addition to toughening scrutiny of remittances, the Japanese parliament is working on a bill that would allow Japanese coast guard patrols to inspect North Korean cargo ships in international waters – a policy supported by a Security Council resolution last year but complicated by Japan's pacifist constitution.
South Korean officials have played down the possibility of a conflict with North Korea, despite heated rhetoric from Pyongyang, in an effort to reassure investors.

Wi Sung-lac, South Korea's most senior diplomat on North Korean affairs, told investors before the talks that the road to condemnation at the UN could be long. He also warned against expecting any "tangible" results at the summit, being held on the resort island of Jeju.

Analysts disagree over what motivated North Korea to fire the torpedo at the South Korean warship. The theories range from Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, trying to cement support with the military ahead of a succession in the hermit regime, to efforts to take revenge over a naval battle in November which saw on of North Korea's ships badly damaged.

As usual bull shit going on all over the world..................

China has ruled out a stopover by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who had hoped to make improved military ties with Beijing the centerpiece of his trip to Asia this week.

Gates leaves Wednesday for an around-the-world trip that will take him to countries in Asia and Europe, but aides said China has explained that this is not a convenient time.

Beijing didn't elaborate, but China leaders were angered by the Obama administration's recent decision to go ahead with arms sales to Taiwan worth more than $6 billion.

Gates will spend the weekend meeting with defense officials from every other major Asian power during a security conference in Singapore.

SEOUL (AFP) – South Korean intelligence officials are investigating a two-star army general on suspicion of leaking to North Korea, a report said Friday.
The general, identified only as Kim, had allegedly leaked classified information related to military management and operations, Yonhap news agency said.
Military and intelligence officials declined to confirm the report.
The investigation came after http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100604/wl_asia_afp/skoreankoreamilitaryespionage# arrested two South Koreans Thursday on charges of handing over military secrets to North Korea, Yonhap said.
The two included a former South Korean spy, identified as Park, who was recruited by North Korea while working in it said.
Park acquired military secrets through the general, handed them over to a North Korean agent in China, and received an unspecified amount of money, Yonhap said.
Investigators will try to determine if Kim and Park had additional accomplices, it said.
