According to the Daily Monitor, 50 year old Sulaiman Barasa was allegedly abducted at gun point by the soldiers from his home at 6pm on March 6, with his 15 year old son and led into the forest where they were both tortured.
"The three soldiers found us preparing an eucalyptus tree nursery bed and beckoned my father over. When he approached them, the men began beating him, claiming he was involved in illegal charcoal burning in the forest," the boy told reporters, adding that he too, was not spared from the soldiers' beatings.
Barasa's land shares a boundary with the forest reserve.
The soldiers allegedly demanded that Barasa and his teenage son lead them to the charcoal burning sites in the forest.
While in the forest, the soldiers reportedly stripped Barasa naked, tied his hands behind his back and started beating him.
"They kicked and lashed my father so severely that he begged them to pause the beating so he could answer nature's call, but they refused, and he ended up soiling himself," the boy narrated.
Allegedly, after thoroughly beating the soldiers finally let them go and the boy supported his father back home because he was too battered to walk on his own. Even with his son’s support Barasa reportedly soiled himself three more times on the way home.
According to Evelyn Nekesa, Barasa’s widow, when the father and son got home, they tried to give him first aid but it was too late. Barasa succumbed to his injuries.
Unfortunately, Barasa's murder is not the first case to be reported. On July 19, 2018,UPDF soldiers shot dead Moses Oundo, a resident of Namugondi, while he was harvesting wild yams in the forest. In July 2024, Godfrey Wafula, was beaten and stripped naked by soldiers after being found walking in the forest reserve. Despite growing outcries from residents of Buyanga, Bulumbi, Busitema, and Namugondi over harassment, no suspect has ever been arrested or prosecuted.
