NDOLEZI CUP 2025: FROM A CHILDHOOD PROMISE TO A DISTRICT-WIDE MOVEMENT
I was born in Nguruka Ward, Uvinza District, and it is here that my life story began. I studied both primary and secondary school in Nguruka, growing up side by side with young people whose lives were rich in talent but poor in opportunity. Every day, I saw gifted youth footballers, musicians, and creatives with full of potential, yet lacking access to education, exposure, and platforms to grow.
That experience shaped my purpose early in life. I made a personal vow: "if I ever found the light, I would become a bridge for the youth back home". I would help transform raw talent into opportunity and hope into action.
Uvinza District, located in Kigoma Region in western Tanzania, has a population of 458,353 people, the majority of whom are young. This reality demanded action.
On May 15, 2025, I officially launched the Ndolezi Cup 2025, a football league anchored on one powerful message:
“Sports are Health and Unity.”
The vision was simple yet transformative to unite young people, promote physical fitness, and remind our communities that a strong nation is built by healthy, disciplined, and united citizens.
Because of Uvinza’s vast and challenging geography, I strategically selected four wards—Nguruka, Itebula, Mganza, and Mtegowanoti. Together, these wards represent 135,545 residents across 12 villages. Each village proudly formed its own team, and the league was designed on a home-and-away format, allowing Ndolezi Cup to travel from village to village and touch every corner of the community.
The journey to deliver Ndolezi Cup 2025 was not easy. It demanded sacrifice, patience, and resilience. Through the support of friends, well-wishers, and believers in the vision, we mobilized sports equipment to empower the youth. We successfully secured 12 full sets of jerseys and 20 footballs, ensuring that every participating team received a ball and a full kit.
One of the most symbolic achievements was the revival of the Nguruka Village football ground. For years, it had been neglected and forgotten. I made it a priority to restore its dignity by replacing old wooden goalposts with modern steel goalposts a lasting investment in youth, safety, and pride.
Preparation for the Ndolezi Cup took six months. We began by obtaining official clearance from the District Football Association, followed by extensive engagement with sports stakeholders. Together, we established a League Board responsible for team registration, regulations, and coordination. From March 1 to May 1, 2025, the leadership team conducted village tours, mobilizing youth and raising awareness about the league.
On May 15, 2025, Ndolezi Cup officially kicked off, marked by the ceremonial unveiling of the new steel goalposts at Nguruka Village. Over three intense and thrilling weeks, the tournament delivered high-level competition, passion, and unity. The grand final was played on June 10, 2025, and it was nothing short of epic and electrifying.
The final match drew massive crowds, filling the stadium with energy, chants, and emotion. When the final whistle blew, the celebration erupted. Music, dancing, joy, and unity followed the match as youth and community members came together in a powerful celebration of achievement, peace, and togetherness. It was a moment that will live forever in the memory of Uvinza.
Ndolezi Cup 2025 went beyond football. It became a social movement. It united communities, inspired discipline and teamwork among youth, and created economic opportunities especially for women entrepreneurs, who benefited greatly from the large match-day crowds.
In total, the tournament attracted over 100,000 spectators, making it one of the most impactful community sports initiatives in the district’s history.
This success has sparked a greater vision to use sports as a platform for education and social change. Ndolezi Cup will continue to grow as a tool for addressing key community challenges, including climate change. In Uvinza, where tobacco farming leads to extensive tree cutting, sports gatherings will be used to promote mass tree planting and environmental conservation, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
These achievements were made possible by a dedicated and selfless team that stood firmly behind the vision. Together, we proved that change is possible when purpose meets action.
Ndolezi Cup 2025 was not just a tournament, it was the fulfillment of a childhood promise and the beginning of a movement. ❤️⚽
