A 20-year-old house-help has been charged with the killing of an eight-month baby.

Regina Wambui Njoroge is alleged to have killed Stephanie Nzisa Wambua on May 18, 2016, in Nairobi's Umoja Two Estate. Ms Wambui did not take the plea because she did not have legal representation. High Court judge Jessie Lessit said Wambui will wait for the state to allocate her a lawyer and will take her plea on June 6.

The prosecution said investigations were complete and that the woman, said to have worked in that house for only four days, was fit to face trial. And in the same court, a grandson to the late Defence minister Njenga Karume, who is facing murder charges, has been released on a Sh1 million cash bail or a Sh2 million bond.

Kenneth Wathugi Karume was charged with murdering his girlfriend. He allegedly pushed Victoria Wairimu Kulungia alias Mumbi from the fourth floor of Gracia Apartment in Kiambu Town on March 25.

Justice Lessit, while releasing Mr Wathugi, said the prosecution had not given compelling reasons to deny the accused bail.

"There is no reason the prosecution has given to show that the accused is a flight risk and will interfere with witnesses," said Lessit. She added that the defence had proved that the accused was not a flight risk and that he would co-operate with investigators. The case will be mentioned on June 14.
