A former Belgian ambassador to the United States was among those killed in the Brussels terror attacks on Tuesday.

The Belgian Foreign Ministry confirmed Saturday that Andre Adam, who served as ambassador to the U.S. during the Bill Clinton administration, was killed in the attack on Zaventem airport. His wife Danielle was injured in the attacks, according to a statement from the family.


Their daughter Gigi paid tribute to her parents on Facebook. “A cultured and cheerful man, my father was an esteemed diplomat,” she wrote. “He was a loving father and an adored grandfather. He died protecting our mother during the bloody attacks in Zaventem this Tuesday, March 22. His death has wounded us all forever. All his life he had worked towards the peaceful resolution of conflict in the world.”

In addition to his time as ambassador to U.S., Adam was Belgian ambassador to the United Nations.

Danielle Adam was injured in the bombings Tuesday at Brussels airport. An earlier version of the story had stated that she had died along with her husband.
