Uganda president Yoweri museveni says this is the last time he is vying for presidency in Uganda, urges Ugandans to come in large numbers and vote for him for the last time.
- Tunachokijua
- In August, Uganda’s ruling party, the NRM, nominated President Yoweri Museveni to contest in the January 2026 general election, giving him a chance to seek a seventh term in office.
Museveni, 80, has been in power since 1986. He has won every election since scrapping both presidential term limits and the age limit for candidates.
The Claim
A video widely shared on social media, including Instagram, appears to show President Museveni urging his supporters to turn out in large numbers because he is running for president for the last time.
The Facts
JamiiCheck’s verification shows this claim is false.
Investigations found that the audio in the video had been manipulated and is unrelated to Uganda’s ongoing election process. A Google reverse image search revealed that the footage originated from Museveni’s visit to Egypt in August 2025.
During his three-day trip, Museveni met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. On August 12, he delivered a speech highlighting the long-standing friendship between Uganda and Egypt, stressing that their unity is strengthened by the River Nile.
At no point did Museveni mention Uganda’s upcoming election or opposition leader Bobi Wine. The viral video has been edited with a fake voiceover.
Moreover, no credible outlet has reported Museveni saying that the 2026 election will be his last.
