Medical interns have rejected a government deadline requiring them to report to their assigned internship centres, insisting they will remain at home until their concerns over welfare, allowances and the new health training policy are addressed.

The Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) formally communicated the decision to Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi in a letter dated August 13, deepening the standoff between the government and the interns.

FUMI Secretary General Dr Allan Okwir said the interns were aware of the government's position that those who fail to report could lose their internship placements, but maintained that the federation would not back down.

“We wish to reaffirm the commitment of medical interns not to report for internship until our concerns are satisfactorily addressed,” FUMI said.
