The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Mbarara District, David Muhwezi, has been arrested following recommendations by the District Public Accounts Committee (PAC) over alleged irregularities in the allocation of district land.

Muhwezi's arrest follows a PAC sitting on Tuesday, during which committee members questioned his role in the allocation of more than 20 acres of district land to various entities, including the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA), the Office of the Auditor General, and Kampala International University.

According to the committee, the land allocations were made without the necessary documentation and approvals, raising concerns about compliance with established procedures governing public land management.

PAC members faulted Muhwezi for allegedly failing to provide the technical guidance required of his office and for not properly advising the district council on matters relating to the allocation of public land.

As part of the committee's recommendations, Muhwezi has been ordered to vacate office with immediate effect to allow for investigations into the matter without interference.

The embattled CAO is currently being held at Bwizibwera Police Station as investigations continue.

District authorities say the probe will seek to establish the circumstances under which the land was allocated and whether any laws or procedures were violated in the process.
