On May 23rd hundreds of thousands of people across 6 continents and 48 countries marched peacefully against the food and agriculture company known as Monsanto.
March against Monsanto state that they want to call for "further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs" and that they will continue to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.
Monsanto began producing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the 1930s. These were used in insulating fluids for transformers and capacitors, plasticisers in paint and cement, and in carbonless copy paper. A particular problem with these was their fat solubility, allowing them to be stored in the body. They were banned from manufacture in the 1970s and we still find low levels of PCBs in the environment. At high levels they are carcinogens and cause reproductive and developmental disorders.
In the 1960s Monsanto was one of the companies involved in the manufacture of "Agent Orange" which was used by the US in the Vietnam war to clear dense areas of forests but it also killed thousands of people and children in Vietnam are still being born with birth defects which include deformities, mental health problems, hydrocephalus just to name a few. All of these are due to this one herbicide. Monsanto does stress that it was only involved in the manufacture of the herbicide, not how it was used.
It seems that the recent decline in bee populations may also be linked somewhat to Monsanto. Harvard published a study in May 2014 to investigate the links between neonicotinoids (which Monsanto put on some of their seeds) and honey bee populations. The leader of the study, Chensheng Lu, stated "We demonstrated again in this study that neonicotinoids are highly likely to be responsible for triggering CCD in honey bee hives that were healthy prior to the arrival of winter." However, Monsanto have started to work towards achieving a healthy population of honey bees by joining the Honey Bee Health Coalition.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) published a study on March 20th on the affects of herbicides produced by Monsanto and found that the main ingredient (glyphosphate) is a probable carcinogen.
Monsanto re-launched in 2001 to focus solely on agriculture are now mostly involved in the manufacture of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) which they and the WHO claim are safe.
So why are people marching against Monsanto?
According to numerous studies conducted by various institutions conclude that GMOs are not safe to consume. The studies in favour of GMO production and against it can be found here. The safety of GMOs is an ongoing debate which started when they were first developed.
