Momentum is building up toward celebrations of Mandela Day tomorrow in South Africa and around the world. Parliament will open its doors to people from various organisations around the Western Cape today to commemorate Madiba's birthday. Many South Africans are deciding how they'll render 67 minutes of service to the needy tomorrow.
In North West province, doctors and MECs have already gone to an old age centre in Mafikeng to do their 67 minutes. However, people with disabilities, homeless children and young people from identified drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres will visit Parliament to interact with senior officials and tour the premises. Officials will donate stationery, sports kits, books, toys, clothes and food to all invited organisations.
Meanwhile, Mandela Day is firmly on the agenda in New York after a week of events and activities that included a gala dinner hosted by former US President Bill Clinton and Madiba's wife, Graca Machel. Thousands will gather for a concert of grand proportions at the Radio City Music Hall in the city tomorrow for the annual 46664 concert that will launch the new initiative. Mandela Day is an initiative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and 46664.
