Makerere Authorises Supplementary Exams for Final-Year Students

Makerere University has authorised the exceptional administration of supplementary examinations for eligible final-year students, giving them an opportunity to clear outstanding academic requirements and qualify for the 77th Graduation Ceremony scheduled for January 2027.

The supplementary examinations will be conducted from September 7 to 11, 2026, according to the university administration.

The decision follows a resolution of the University Council at its 171st meeting, which directed the University Senate to develop a Supplementary Examinations Policy aimed at supporting the timely completion of studies by affected final-year students.

Makerere said the current arrangement is being granted on an interim and exceptional basis, pending formal consideration and ratification of the proposed policy by Senate.

The opportunity is limited to final-year students who have not failed more than two course units and whose final marks fall within the specified ranges.
For undergraduate students, those who scored between 30% and 49% will be eligible, while postgraduate students must have obtained between 40% and 59% in the affected course units.

The university said marking will begin immediately after the examinations to ensure students who successfully pass can be considered for inclusion in the January 2027 graduation ceremony.

Eligible students have been advised to apply and contact their respective College Principal, Dean or Head of Department for guidance on the application and examination process.
The decision has been welcomed by the Makerere University Students’ Guild, which has been engaging university management on matters affecting students' academic progress and welfare.

In a communication dated August 28, Guild President H.E. Kadondi Gracious informed students about the exceptional arrangement, saying it would provide eligible finalists with an opportunity to complete their studies.

“This is to officially inform the student body that exceptional administration of the supplementary examinations has been granted for final-year students during the week of 7th–11th September 2026,” Kadondi said.​

He said the arrangement follows the Council's decision to have a formal policy developed to address supplementary examinations and support students facing delays in completing their studies.

The supplementary examinations could provide a second opportunity for finalists who narrowly missed the required pass mark, potentially allowing them to complete their programmes and graduate in January rather than wait for a later graduation ceremony.

The move comes as Makerere University continues efforts to streamline academic processes and reduce delays for students who have met the requirements for completion.
