Ghana now Oil Producing Country

Ghana has officially joined the comity of oil producing and exporting countries. President John Evans Atta Mills turned on the valves on the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah for production to start.

In a speech, President Atta-Mills said the event means the country is assuming a serious responsibility adding that those in leadership positions should ensure that the oil find is a blessing rather than a curse.

The Minister of Energy, Dr. Joe Oteng Adjei said for decades, there have been attempts by governments to exploit the country's petroleum and gas resources.

He showered praises on the Rawlings and the Kufuor administrations for their roles in the oil find.

The Deputy Minister of Energy in charge of Petroleum, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, describes 15th December, 2010 as a historic day of national unity as Ghana celebrates its initial oil production.

He told Radio Ghana that the presence of the two former Presidents, Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor signifies blessing and unity.

The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Attibrukusu was however happy that the country has joined the ranks of oil producing countries.

He called for the benefit of the oil discovery to reflect in the lives of the people of the region.
