[h=1]Supkem disowns 'radicalised youth'[/h]
Wednesday, February 5, 2014 - 00:00 -- BY ADOW MOHAMED THE Supreme Council of Kenya Muslim has condemned Sunday's incident at Masjid Musa. In a statement, Supkem secretary general Adan Wachu said: "Islam is not terrorism and it is wrong for places of worship to be used as a hideout for criminal activities."
The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims is shocked by the utter illegality, criminality and un-Islamic action of marauding youths at the Musa mosque in Mombasa. We are unable to say the brand of faith they represent and in that regard, we completely disown them, he said.
"We condemn both the youths and their uncivil deeds as Islam has a well cultured manner of doing things. Leadership in Islam is nurtured and anchored on trust, ability, knowledge and fairness to dispense justice.
He said violent extremism among the youth especially at the Coast is real and asked the government to take "stern action" against them.
What the youths who claim to embrace Islam are doing is neither in the Qur'an nor sayings of the prophet. We fully support the current imams and leadership of all mosques and Muslim institutions in Kenya. We call upon all Muslims to be united against this monster, Wachu said.
However, there is growing concern that Muslim institutions such as Supkem have failed to address youth extremism. The executive director of the Muslim for Human Rights Forum, Al Amin Kimathi yesterda said Muslim leaders have failed to talk to the "brainwashed" youths and make them understand their religion and what it advocates.
"Religious leaders have failed the youth. They failed to use the pulpit to address the danger of violent youth extremism which away for the tenets of Islam," he told the Star
