The Independent Policing Oversight Authority was established by an Act of Parliament, published in November 2011, to provide civilian oversight of the work of the police in Kenya.

Since its establishment, it has received and processed 34,988 cases. Referred 878 cases to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and got 39 convictions.
