SIMBA Sports Club's prolific defender Shomari Kapombe has been registered by a French fourth division side AS Cannes.
Simba chairman Ismail Aden Rage was quoted as saying Kapombe is currently playing for his new team but the Msimbazi Street club has extended his contract to two years.
The player's current contract with Simba expires in April next year. "We (Simba) have entered into a contract with Cannes that compels the French side to look for a better team for Kapombe within two years from now," Rage said.
He added that if the defender fails to get a better team during that period he will be compelled to return home and continue playing for Simba. Rage said that Cannes will be responsible for Kapombe's welfare throughout the time he will be in France.
He said in case he is sold to any other club Simba will get their share and insisted that the player wants to stay in France so that he can be developed further. "We've agreed that Simba will get nothing for the time being but if he is sold to another club we'll get our share," said Rage.
"Coaches in Europe have noticed that he is a good player but his skills need to be developed before he becomes a dependable star," he added. Rage said in the new contract Simba have given priority to national and the player's interests. He noted that if Kapombe succeeds in Europe he will open doors to more Tanzanian players who aspire to feature in European leagues.
The player's agent, Denis Kadito, said Kapombe has shown he is a good player but he is hampered by Tanzania's obscurity in world football. "Cannes' offer is good because they play with reserve teams of Ligue One clubs and so Kapombe will be easily spotted by their scouts.
This will help him to be signed by better clubs within one season," he said. Cannes are one of the big clubs in France and have produced several top class players like Patrick Vieira, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Hernandez.
