Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi has cautioned Kenyans investing in Treasury Bills and Treasury Bonds that the government may struggle to meet its future debt obligations if the country's debt burden continues to grow. Speaking while criticizing the 2026/27 budget, Wanjigi argued that rising public debt and increased borrowing could put pressure on government finances in the coming years.

According to Wanjigi, a significant portion of government revenue is already being used to service existing debt, leaving less money available for development projects and essential public services. He claimed that continued reliance on borrowing could eventually affect the government's ability to meet some of its financial commitments on time.

The businessman-turned-politician also questioned the government's growing appetite for domestic borrowing, warning that it could increase pressure on taxpayers while limiting funds available to support economic growth. His remarks come as the Treasury plans to raise hundreds of billions of shillings from the local market to finance the 2026/27 budget and refinance maturing debt.

However, the government has maintained that its debt management strategy remains sustainable and that Treasury Bills and Bonds continue to be secure investment instruments backed by the state. Treasury officials have repeatedly defended their borrowing plans, insisting that Kenya remains capable of meeting its debt obligations while funding key development programmes.
