Police has confirmed that three people died when a building along Makerere Hill Road collapsed on Monday.

The building next to Ham Towers in Wandegeya collapsed on Monday, burying them in the rubble and leaving scores injured.

Atero Immaculate, a traffic officer told Daily Monitor that the three died on spot without naming them.

Police said the building [Kyaseka Towers] was being used yet it had not been completed.

The number of those injured was still unclear by Monday evening.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango says those still trapped were calling earlier “but their phones are now off”.

Onyango said the owner of the collapsed building will be arrested.

“He can run but he cannot hide forever.”

At least 8 people are reportedly killed when a six-storey building still under construction collapsed near Makerere University in Kampala, eyewitnesses say.

A Makerere University student told EagleOnline the Kyaseka Towers a commercial building along Makerere Hill road after Ham Shopping Mall but before Makerere College School female hostels collapsed on Monday afternoon after the owners had added floors despite lacking a permit from authorities, which had sealed off the site – a common problem in Kampala surburbs where law enforcement is weak.

Good Samaritans initially put the death toll at five, but by press time Police were reportedly pulling out more victims from the rubble.

The building site had been inhabited by boutique owners on the ground floor.

“After they (the owners) finished building the house, rain fell and the house shifted a bit. They put iron in front of the house (but) the iron couldn’t hold the house,” said a man formerly working on the site to an eyewitness.

“They left it like that and continued building.”

At least one body has been recovered after the collapse of a building in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Rescuers have so far brought seven people out from the rubble alive, eyewitnesses have told the BBC.

A large crowd has gathered and rescue workers have been pleading with people to move back, the BBC's Patience Atuhaire reports from the scene.

Officials have not said what was behind the collapse, which happened opposite Uganda's famous Makerere University.

Several small businesses had reportedly been occupying the basement and ground-floor levels of the building.

Reports of the building's deteriorating condition had already forced some of the business owners to remove their property from the site, amid fears that rainwater had seeped into the foundations, residents told the BBC.
