Diderot once said something along the lines of, "Mankind will never know peace until the last king is strangled with the guts of the last priest."
Egregious examples of barbaric credos evidenced in the three Abrahamic religions are numerous. Critical differences in so-called testimonies were pooh-poohed as "errors" in "interpretation of thinking about life and how to live it, with little emphasis on a deity.
All religions relying on giving one's life to such deities, however, suffer the added danger of submitting to intermediaries, like Diderot's priest, who, in their own zest for living, gleefully consign even 10 year old girls and people to suicidal deaths for "the cause" so they can live their gnarled and twisted realities. All the while swearing it's all for peace.
So what's the big picture? I mean broadly speaking, why do fundamentalists of all stripes have such hang-ups with 'non-believers'? Does mocking them actually solve the problem or get to the root of the problem of fundamentalist thought patterns?
What Charlie Hebdo and others should do is serious journalism about the process of faith and belief. They should clarify what is the difference between moderates who are serious about their faith and will defend it within reason, yet always non-violent, and those who apparently see religion and politics as a tool to enforce their worldview against an unwilling populace.
Don't shout , threaten, convert or proselytize....persuade me
