Uganda marks 64 years of independence on October 9, 2026. But beyond the parades, speeches and celebrations, what should Ugandans be reflecting on?

The country has made progress in infrastructure, education, technology and economic development. Yet Uganda also faces a growing public debt burden, economic pressures, unemployment and limited opportunities. Public debate continues over arrests and detention of opposition figures, political tensions and Ugandans living in exile.

So, as Uganda turns 64, what does independence mean for the ordinary citizen?

What should Uganda be celebrating at 64 — and what still needs to change?
