Former Bukoto South MP Twaha Kagabo has opened up about his experience in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), saying he was surprised by the level of intrigue and internal disagreements he found after crossing from the opposition.
Speaking during an interview on Sanyuka Television, Kagabo reflected on his political journey, which saw him elected to Parliament in 2021 on the ticket of the National Unity Platform (NUP) before later joining the NRM.
Kagabo said he entered the ruling party with a different perception but soon became disappointed by some of the realities he encountered.
“I became frustrated after joining NRM. I had a different picture, but when I joined, I realized there were some issues that were not proper. That made me disappointed,” he said.
According to the former legislator, political intrigue is common across parties, but he was particularly surprised by the intensity of internal competition within the NRM.
“There is a lot of intrigue in NRM, but just like in the whole field of politics. You need to be very careful, otherwise things can become worse for you,” Kagabo noted.
His remarks come months after he failed to secure the NRM flag for the Bukoto South parliamentary seat ahead of the 2026 elections. Following his defeat in the party primaries, Kagabo opted to contest as an independent candidate while maintaining ties with the ruling party.
However, he eventually lost the seat in the January 2026 general election to NUP's Hakim Kizza Sawula, ending a turbulent political chapter marked by his departure from the opposition, entry into the NRM, and subsequent independent bid.
Kagabo rejected suggestions that his electoral defeat was a direct result of abandoning the opposition and also defended his past criticism of opposition leaders, insisting that he merely exercised his right to express his views publicly.
Twaha Kagabo is most remembered for the 2022 Shs40 million cash scandal, after he publicly revealed that Members of Parliament had received cash from government officials particularly from the former speaker Anita Annette Among and displayed the money before the media, triggering a national controversy. His claims sparked investigations by Parliament's Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline, which later recommended his suspension from parliamentary sittings for breaching House rules.
