Playing in the Europa League next season is AC Milan's primary aim following their elimination from the Champions League, according to general manager Adriano Galliani.
The Rossoneri went down 5-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid after a 4-1 defeat at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday, seeing their European campaign end prematurely.
Inter Milan faded towards the end of last season and missed out on the Europa League, without showing too many regrets. However, Milan are intent on closing a nine-point gap on their city rivals and ensuring they will still represent Italy in Europe next season.
"It's not at all true that Milan don't want to play in the Europa League," Galliani told Milan Channel. "Qualifying for it will be our club's objective between now and the end of the season.
"We need to beat Parma on Sunday to move to within five points of the Gialloblu. Milan have always been in Europe in recent years and so we want to remain in Europe."
Sixth place will almost certainly be enough for a berth in the Europa League next season, unless one of third-placed Napoli or fourth-placed Fiorentina -- the Coppa Italia finalists -- drop to seventh in the table.
Eight points separate Milan from Parma in sixth, but with 20 points to make up on Napoli in the 11 remaining league games, a place in the Champions League next season seems beyond them.
Milan last failed to qualify for the Champions League in 2008. They were eliminated from the 2008-09 UEFA Cup by Werder Bremen in the last 32 and have not gone beyond the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League since winning the trophy in 2007.
The last time the Rossoneri failed to qualify for any European club competition was in 1998, when they finished tenth in an 18-team Serie A, also missing out on a place in the Intertoto Cup.

Montella to Milan?
Sensational reports in the Italian Press this afternoon claim that Vincenzo Montella could be targeted by Milan in the summer.
Sport Mediaset suggest that the Rossoneri will relieve Clarence Seedorf of his coaching duties at the end of the season, regardless of where they finish in the table.
And with the Dutchman out of the picture, Barbara Berlsuconi will go to the Fiorentina boss and try to tempt him to San Siro.
The former Roma striker may prove difficult to get however, having signed a contract to keep him in Tuscany until 2017.
It is also unclear whether Montella would want to swap Champions League-chasing Fiorentina for middle of the table Milan.
Mediaset though, insist that the Diavolo are looking at the Viola tactician as a potential successor to Seedorf.
And should they get their man, Luciano Spalletti is expected to come in at Artemio Franchi, having been sacked by Zenit St Petersburg in March.
