A shame on us Kenyans....but also an example to follow...
LRT

The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) covers an area of 1,000 Km2 and is the major business and industrial hub of Uganda, contributing over 70% of the country’s industrial production and over 60% of the country’s GDP. The GKMA will play a greater role in driving Uganda’s transformation to middle income status as envisaged in Vision 2040. In order to provide cheap, reliable, convenient, comfortable and safe public mass transport for the GKMA, the Government of Uganda is developing a Light Rail Mass Transit (LRT) system.

The proposed routes to be operational by 2020 will include:

  1. Kampala-Namanve via Nakawa, spear motors, Kyambogo, Banda, Kireka and Bweyogerere (12 km)
  2. Kampala-Kajjansi via Kibuye, Najjanankumbi and Zana, Lubowa, Seguku and Lweza (12 Km);
  3. Kampala-Kyengera via Katwe, Kibuye, Ndeeba, Nalukolongo and Natete (7 km)
  4. Kampala-Kawempe via Nakivubo, Kisekka, Wandegeya, Mulago, Kubbiri and Kalerwe (9 Km).

In addition to the above LRT routes, the existing Kampala Railway Station will be remodeled into a multi-modal transport hub to enhance inter-connectivity of the different transport modes in the city
Watch a master plan by Government of Uganda to de-congest Kampala through the Light Rail Mass Transit. Passenger Trains will be operational by 2020 (Phase 1)

ours is still in God knows what stage...good for Uganda and Ethiopia too and we should take this as an example...we should not settle for mediocre services from the Chinese

Hapa ug bado sana, kama sgr funding ni shida hii ndio wataweza.kwanza sgr yao pengine ianze after kenyas election, maana gava imekanyagia hiyo section nyingine na bila ke m7 hapati hiyo pesa ng'o

When our brt started I truly thought light rail was the way to go. Saivi it's clear we will Never see light rail in Dar What a waste! Anyway we've instead settled cofortably with the shoes that fit. Mwakyembe!

I also think Tanzania did rush to make the wrong decision...Light Rail is way better than BRT...i wonder how Ethiopia did both the Light rail and SGR at the same time

Priorities Jay456watt, In East Africa, it is only Nairobi that is about ripe for things like a light rail. Light rails need supporting infrastructure and alternatives also. Have you ever been to Kampala?? The congestion and lack of good roads pavements and clean streets will leave a light rail quite displaced. Imagine passing a light rail in Korogocho, and in Westlands, the one of westlands will definitely be maintained easily due to lack of congestion and there is order. Kenya has taken it well, let it open up the city with world class roads like Thika Road and Outer ring, develop modern markets to remove street hawkers and bring order, make pavements and sidewalks and good drainage to remove dust and mud, develop car parks and remove unnecessary human congestion. Then bring trams, they will fit in very well.

Congested because no better alternatives
ss.png

A very good initiative but because the city was not well prepared, the BRT looks out of place mishandled, dirtied and looks out of place. The human congestion in stations makes them dirty and unfit, in few years to come, the stations will be dilapidated and in state of disrepair, then the government gives up.

Remember the the Nyayo Bus?? Or Kenya Bus?? in Kenya??

So i think Kenya is doing just well, after finishing the missing link roads, they can now bring in a tram that can serve dedicated and passengers who need it, not who have to use it as there are no alternatives

Unacheza, Chiken on Bus floor, hata mbuzi wataweka, the issue is, they will end up crowding the buses with people going from one Mama mboga market to another, professionals, college and university students, tecnocrats, going to and from town will find it difficult to board a bus and sit next to a cage of chicken, ama kondoo amefungwa miguu ya mbele na nyuma, ako kwa floor.

The status of the project goes down and the buses will end up doing exactly the same kazi mkokoteni inafanya

I hope the new Kenyan Govt ups this by building a "subway". (Kangemi, Westlands, Nairobi Railway Station, Doohholm, to Jomo Kenyatta )Airport for starters. Get the experience and build more after that. The Chinese that are building those SGR tunnels should be consulted, or like wise talk to the Japanese, " they have so much experience building subways".

I think Kenya was thinking about building Light Rails. I dont think light rails are the best solution. If you look at Ethiopia's. It looks cool, but not really ideal for moving lots of people around efficiently. For me it looks like a short term solution. First the car bodys are so narrow, you board with your trunk(Luggage), and it feels like you are blocking everyone else thats on board.

yeah kinda true...the coaches are really small and ppl squeeze each other inside....

I think India has been able to build a subway but not as expensively as Europe, or US costs. They should consult them. If you think about the amount of money we lose through graft yearly we should be able to afford a subway.

Also this idea of Kenya Railway selling land for apartments should be done away with. They havent even fulfilled their core mandate of providing us with efficient rail transport, and they are thinking of building apartments. They will need that land in future for expansion. Its like the news i saw yesterday that the Kenya Bullet factory in eldoret made loses in selling bullets, but made profits in its side business of selling bread. So crazy.
