A Ghanaian witch doctor has claimed that he has “released” England captain Harry Kane from a spell after the striker failed to score in England’s goalless World Cup draw against Ghana. The unusual claim emerged shortly after the Group L encounter, which ended 0-0 and left England still searching for qualification to the knockout stage.
The self described spiritualist, Nana Kwaku Bonsam, had publicly stated before the match that he intended to cast a spell to prevent Kane from finding the back of the net against Ghana. Following the draw, Bonsam posted a video on social media saying he had now lifted the spell and wished the England striker well in his future matches.
In the video, Bonsam said he would allow Kane to score again and insisted that the Bayern Munich forward should not be offended, describing him as a friend. The remarks quickly attracted global attention and sparked debate among football fans about superstition in the sport.
Kane entered the match in good form after scoring twice in England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in their World Cup opener. However, against Ghana he endured a frustrating afternoon and missed his best opportunity deep into stoppage time when he fired over the bar from close range. The miss denied England a victory that would have secured their place in the knockout rounds.
Despite the setback, Kane remained calm after the match and said he was not dwelling on the missed chance. The England captain noted that such moments are part of life for a striker and emphasized that not every opportunity results in a goal.
The bizarre story has become one of the most talked-about off-field incidents of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many fans treating the witch doctor's claims humorously while others view them as part of Ghana's rich cultural traditions and football folklore.
