So, they have benefits, but they also present challenges. They need to be better organised, and we had already started that process. As the city struggles with gridlock, rapid urbanization, and increasing transport demand, government is rolling out plans to modernize mobility through mass transit systems that will transform how people move while addressing long-standing inefficiencies in Kampala’s transport network and infrastructure.
In an interview, the Minister of Works and Transport Gen Edward Katumba Wamala said the transition to mass transport will gradually reduce the dominance of boda-bodas and taxis, though they will remain part of the system as government improves organized and efficient urban mobility solutions.
In February, it was revealed that, Motorcycle taxis, commonly known as boda boda, will not be allowed into Kampala City central business district (CBD) once the Kampala City Transport Regulatory Plan is implemented. The plan, being developed by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), bans any unregistered boda boda from accessing the five city divisions of Nakawa, Rubaga, Kawempe, Makindye, and Kampala Central.
Officials from KCCA yesterday said the move intends to organise the boda boda sector, end its related criminality, and restore sanity and order in the city. Mr Daniel NuweAbine, the head of corporate and public affairs at KCCA, told the Monitor in an exclusive interview that the authority shall gazette 929 stages across the five divisions, and accommodate only 27,870 registered boda boda and their riders.
