Fraud is not a new terminology in this era of science and technology. It is everywhere! Though it takes many forms, but the simple definition says that “Fraud is a deliberately deception for personal or financial gain”.

We have witnessed many organizations suffer losses due to fraud in each year, and the figures are piling up every day. Due to global economic instability and other factors, we expect this problem to keep many employers sleepless.

Fraudsters have developed new and sophisticated methods for committing their ill intentions without being detected. Sometimes it takes up to 24 months to detect a single fraudulent activity happened in a particular department.

Unfortunately, for those frauds committed by senior management officials, cost more dollar amount than the ones committed by junior staff. In this situation even the prevention, detection and investigation become very difficult due to position and influence of an individual.

Fraudsters are normally smart guys who know the internal control weaknesses of the organization and know how to manipulate them. For that reason if the investigation will not be conducted properly and professionally, it would end up producing poor results and so may mislead those responsible for taking disciplinary actions against the involved ones.

Sometimes due to poor investigation, the management can take disciplinary action against suspected employees basing just on opinions instead of facts. And we have seen many terminations of this kind especially in financial institutions.

This kind of termination sometimes can cost the organization when the matter is forwarded to labor courts or CMA in Tanzania because the employer will be exposed and challenged to prove whether the termination was fair or not. CMA stands for Commission for Mediation and Arbitration.

It creates frustrations sometimes in the sense that the terminated employee has really defrauded the employer but because there was poor investigation, the evidence becomes problem to justify the termination.

On other side the employers could decide to fire an employee on personal grounds but covered up with any serious misconduct to justify the termination. This is also unfair and it has been affected many employees in many organizations. In this situation someone can conclude that the employers sometimes decide to terminate their employees by any cost. However, most of the time these cases had ended up at labor courts.
