In a formal letter, signed by Barry Andrews, Robert Biedroń, Udo Bullmann, Michael Gahler, Erik Marquardt, and David McAlliste, the lawmakers expressed alarm over the deteriorating state of democratic freedoms in Tanzania, particularly the erosion of free expression and fair electoral conduct.
The letter urges the Tanzanian government to immediately release Lissu, cease persecution of opposition figures and activists, and uphold constitutional principles of rule of law, democracy, political pluralism, and human rights.
It also calls on the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Commission, and EU Member States to publicly position themselves against the repression, warning that continued violations could affect bilateral cooperation with Tanzania.
