Ethiopia denies signing deal on construction of pipeline

The Ethiopian government has clarified that an oil pipeline deal it signed with Kenya was only a commitment by both sides to assess the feasibility of the project, an Ethiopian newspaper reported on Saturday.

The country’s Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas denied inking a formal agreement on the construction of the pipeline, despite the announcement of the same by State House in Nairobi.

“We did not sign a pipeline construction deal. This is utterly an erroneous report,” the minister, Mr Tolossa Shagi told The Reporter.

Mr Shagi said: “We have agreed to take some time to assess the matter. We will hold more talks and may ink a deal if we find the project proposal economically and technically sound. But I can confirm to you that we did not sign a pipeline construction agreement”.

According to the minister, Kenya had presented the idea of a pipeline to his government, with Addis Ababa agreeing to assess its potential before committing to constructing it.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas has denied the recent media report which claims that Ethiopia and Kenya had signed oil pipeline deal.

According to the media report, the proposed pipeline would run all the way from Lamu to Addis Ababa.

However, the Ethiopian Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas has completely denied the vera city of the report. “We did not sign pipeline construction deal. This is utterly an erroneous report,” Tolossa Shagi told The Reporter yesterday.

“A proposal was presented to us but this is not something that we jump into abruptly. We need to evaluate the technical and economical feasibility. Our legal experts have to asses the proposal,” Tolosaa said.

The minister, however, said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the governments of Ethiopia and Kenya on oil and gas cooperation. “Kenya has discovered oil reserves in different parts of the country. So we agreed to work on experience sharing and training. We signed an oil and gas cooperation agreement,” he said.

Ethiopia is contemplating to build a fuel pipeline stretching from Djibouti Port to central Ethiopia. A South African based infrastructure investment group, Black Rhino Group, has finalized its feasibility study on a 1.5 billion dollars Ethio-Djibouti fuel pipeline construction project.

Backed by Black Stone Group, the US investment group, Black Rhino Group, has proposed to the Ethiopian government to build a 550 km long line to transport diesel, gasoline and jet fuel from the port access in Djibouti to central Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government has reviewed the proposal and accepted it in principle. The Ethiopian and Djiboutian governments last year signed framework agreements on pipeline construction. There is also an initiative by the Ethiopian government to build a gas export pipeline from the Ogaden gas fields to the port of Djibouti.

Ni interest ya linking our transport network with most if not all our neighbors, not desperation. The little links tunazo with Tanzania (50m) na Uganda (38m) zimetupea such a huge market na kufoster economic growth kwa nchi zote tatu, can you picture how beneficial strengthening of this links and adding new linkage to Ethiopia (100m) would be economically to all nations

It's sad the Kenyan reporter mislead people by their reporting.

Ni vizuri vile vile kwamba Ethiopia wamekubali kufanya hiyo feasibility study. Natumai watakubali kufanya deal baadaye.

Desperation ya Kenyatta means something else to me ........

Hii inaitwa "struggle for the fittest"... Long time economical supremacy ya Kenya ilichangiwa na kutokuwa na strong & competitive economical rivals lakini kwa sasa time imebadilika maana ile dominance yake katika horticultural products, airline, tourism , industrial product etc.. Is threatened by its neighbours especially Tanzania and ethiopia

Ndo maana ninaona anajitahidi kuendeleza mazingira rafiki kwa multinational investment from physical infrastructures, technology and education...

Kenyatta anakumbana na wakati mgumu kiuchumi pengine kuliko hata Marais waliopita hivyo, desperation ni lazma iwepo
