A seed is someone who has 100% of the file.
A peer is someone who has part of the file and is still downloading from the seeds.

You are downloading from the seeds, and also from the peers who have a bigger percentage of the file than you.

You may be uploading what parts you have of the file to peers who have a lesser percentage of the file than you.mkuu.@MTU MREFU

What Are Seeds and Peers for Torrent Files?

BitTorrent

  • The BitTorrent protocol differs from other file-sharing systems in that files are split up into blocks. This enables a downloader to retrieve a file from several different sources simultaneously. In BitTorrent terminology, the file available for download in the system is called the "torrent."

Torrent File

  • The file-sharing process starts with the creation of a torrent file. Whereas the source file for sharing is called a "torrent," the guide script that locates the file is called a "torrent file." The torrent file contains details of the file to be shared, together with its size and number of blocks. A torrent may contain several files. In this case, the torrent file contains a directory structure with size and block details for each file within the bundle. The torrent file also contains the Web address of a "tracker." The tracker registers the number of copies of a torrent available and their location.

Seeds

  • The owner of the file then opens the new torrent file in his torrent client. The torrent client is like a cross between a Web browser and Windows Explorer. The client contacts the tracker and notifies it of the existence of the file and its location. The torrent also should be advertised in torrent directory sites in order to be found by others. Once someone wanting the file finds the torrent file and opens it in his or her torrent client, the client contacts the tracker, finds the address of the file owner and starts copying it, block by block. When a torrent is being downloaded, it is said to be a "seed." The owner is a "seeder," who is "seeding" the file.

Peers

  • The group of people downloading the same torrent is called a "swarm." Each member of the swarm is called a "peer." Peers not only all copy the file from the seed, they also copy sections of the file from each other, even though the other peers have not completed downloading the entire file. Once a block of the file has been copied onto another computer, it is available as a second source for others to copy. By this method, different blocks are available from different sources.
