Deaf activists call for sign language to be taught in all schools

Activists under the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) have called on Parliament to enact a law requiring all schools to teach sign language.

Speaking during the International Day of the Deaf celebrations in Sembabule , UNAD Director Robert Nkwangu said communication barriers continue to prevent some deaf learners from accessing education.

He said UNAD and other organisations are preparing a Sign Language Bill on inclusive education for presentation to Parliament.

MPs also called for more schools for deaf learners and sign language interpreters in health facilities. Mawogola North MP Godfrey Aine Sodo said Sembabule has more than 2,000 deaf people and proposed a regional school for the Deaf in the district.
