Days after his abduction the story has taken a new turn. Arnold Anthony Mukose, the journalist who was forcibly taken outside Metro FM studios along Martin Road in Old Kampala, has now been remanded over allegations of publishing false information claiming Uganda’s First Lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, had died.
Mukose, 41, a journalist with DigiTalk Media, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Ivan Maloba at the Law Development Centre Court in Kampala on Wednesday. He denied two charges related to the alleged publication and transmission of false information.
Prosecutors allege that between January 26 and March 29, Mr Mukose and others still at large knowingly published false information online about the First Lady’s death, in violation of Uganda Communications regulations and Section 82 of the Uganda Communications Act, he is also accused of broadcasting fake news contrary to Regulation 110(C) of the Uganda Communications Commission (Licensing) Regulations, 2019.
Prosecutor Racheal Namutebi told court that investigations had been completed and requested a hearing date. Defence lawyer Kato Tumusiime argued that Mr Mukose should be granted bail, citing his family ties, fixed residence, and three school-going children.
The prosecution opposed immediate bail, saying more time was needed to verify surety documents.
Magistrate Maloba remanded Mr Mukose to Luzira Prison until April 14, 2026, when court will rule on the bail application.
