Hawa jamaa wanadai hizo scanner zenu haziwezi ku-scan double stack it can be the facility outside where meant for doublestack but the scan equipments were for a single container scan!

SGR cargo business faces hurdle of screening stacked containers​

Cargo haulage by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) faces another hurdle because containers that are double-stacked on wagons cannot be screened by scanners.

Double-stacking of containers was seen as a solution after the Port of Mombasa experienced a shortage of wagons. About 550 wagons were damaged by six giant cranes at the port last November.

The damage reportedly reduced the number of freight trains from the port by half, leading to delays in rail-bound cargo between Mombasa and Nairobi.

However, chairman of the Mombasa Port Community Charter Gilbert Lang’at said yesterday 76 of the wagons have been repaired.
“SGR trains have been carrying double-stacked containers but the problem is that they cannot be scanned,” he said.
Lang’at was speaking on the sidelines of a two-day retreat for port stakeholders and civil society organisations at the PrideInn Paradise hotel in Shanzu, Mombasa County.

The forum was convened by Kenya Private Sector Alliance (Kepsa) to discuss ways of cutting down costs of doing business at the port.
Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority executive secretary Omae Nyarandi said landlocked countries imported more cargo through the port of Mombasa during the Covid-19 period last year.

Nyarandi said there was potential for importers in the landlocked countries to increase the use of the northern corridor as opposed to the central corridor.

Patrick Mainge of Kepsa said port stakeholders were keen to see the cost of using the port of Mombasa go down.

“Mombasa port and northern corridor community is keen to see an efficient port as this will lower the cost of doing business,” he said.

He, however, noted that with the spike in Covid-19 infections, they feared another lockdown could hurt businesses and urged Kenyans to adhere to Ministry of Health protocols.

Lang’at said cargo planned to be transported by SGR from Mombasa to Nairobi sometimes experienced delays.

“The owners wait for their cargo in Nairobi because it is imported Through Bill of Lading (TBL) but they may experience delays in Mombasa,” he noted.

Lang’at, however, said the ship delays experienced at the port in January this year has been resolved and shipping lines had withdrawn threats to impose vessel delay surcharges.

Sasa hapa naona unarudia jambo nililosema awali kuwa hio scanner ilikuwa inascan single-stack trains sasa mbona ulikuwa unapinga hovyo hovyo? Hio scanner bado inafanya kazi sema tu kwamba haiwezi kuscan double-stack trains. Tazama hapa nilichoandika hapo awali na uwache kupinga kila kitu

Empty containers in the sense Mombasa port has no capacity to handle imported loaded containers stappled one over another! Therefore all the pictures of the doublestack trains r usually for the empty containers enroute to Mombasa!

So the lack of scanner to scan moving double stacked trains is the same as the lack of capacity to handle imported cargo on double stacked containers???

Do you even hear yourself? And how would they unload empty double stacked containers at Mombasa port if they can't load them in the first place?? Unless you want to dig yourself deeper by claiming there are different equipment for loading and unloading of containers, thus we only have the equipment to load the empty containers in Nairobi but in Mombasa we only have the equipment to unload.


And BTW, I thought your whole claim that we couldn't do double stacked was because our rail could only carry 25 tons per axle? Sasa naona umeshift reason to scanners and equipment... Whats next? maybe sahii utasema the wagons have the wrong color therefore they can not carry fully loaded double staked 😇

Leave that fool alone. I have tried to educate that fool but he doesn't understand anything.
I have shown him that we have a train scanner that can scan single-stack trains.
As for double-stack, we don't have a train scanner to scan it as written in the article but we do have truck scanners that can scan containers coming from the double-stack train. Our train from Mombasa can still carry double-stacked containers which are fully loaded and when the train arrives at Embakasi ICD, the containers can be transfered to trucks which will move through a truck scanner. Embakasi ICD has a truck scanner so I don't know why this fool thinks that without a train scanner for double-stack trains we cannot scan containers at all. There are even mobile scanners that can be moved from place to place and can operate just fine. Train scanner is not the only type of scanner in the world.

Management improvement has greatly improved transportation efficiency. As of March 21 , the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway had been operating safely for 1,391 days, transporting 5.28 million passengers, 1.229 million standard containers, and 13.07 million tons of cargo .
