Scores of children in Makindye Division have remained at home following the reopening of Term Three, as struggling families find it increasingly difficult to meet rising school requirements.
A charity visit to Ssendawula Zone found a high number of school-age children who had not returned to class, with parents citing the growing cost of keeping children in school.
The situation has renewed calls for school heads to ease admission and other school requirements for vulnerable learners, allowing children to return to class even when their families cannot immediately meet all the demands.
Community members say the rising costs are keeping some children out of school and could deepen existing barriers to education among low-income families.
