Charlie Sheen Opens Up About His Past, Sexuality, and New Memoir

Charlie Sheen memoir and Netflix documentary reveal candid confessions

Charlie Sheen is finally pulling back the curtain on some of the most controversial chapters of his life. The former Two and a Half Men star is opening up in ways he never has before, through his upcoming memoir The Book of Sheen (to be released on September 9) and a new Netflix documentary titled aka Charlie Sheen (out September 10). Both projects, along with his recent PEOPLE magazine cover story, show a man determined not to hide from his past anymore.

“I’m not going to run from my past, or let it own me,” Sheen told the publication. His statement sets the tone for the revelations he shares about sexuality, struggles with addiction, and his public downfall.

For the first time, the actor has spoken candidly about past sexual encounters with men. He explained that these experiences began during his battles with crack cocaine addiction. “That’s what started it. That’s where it was born, or sparked,” Sheen admitted. Now eight years sober, he says he eventually came to terms with it all. “Some of it was weird. A lot of it was fun, and life goes on.”

When asked about discussing his same-sex experiences publicly after years of secrecy, Sheen described it as freeing: “Liberating. It’s f---ing liberating… just talk about stuff. No train came through the side of the restaurant. No piano fell out of the sky. No one ran into the room and shot me.”

The 60-year-old actor also reflected on the period following his HIV diagnosis. He recalled how overnight guests would secretly photograph his medication and later attempt to blackmail him. At first, he paid them off but eventually decided to reveal his status publicly on the Today show in 2015. “I do know for a fact that I never passed it on,” he stressed.

Sheen didn’t shy away from revisiting another infamous moment — his chaotic 20-city “tiger blood” tour in 2011. Looking back, he admitted, “That tour didn’t have to happen. I’m not a victim, but somebody should have tapped out for me and said, ‘This is a bad idea.’”

Alongside self-reflection, Sheen expressed a desire to mend old relationships. One focus is reconnecting with former Two and a Half Men costar Jon Cryer. Though Cryer contributed to the documentary, Sheen says he personally didn’t have the right contact to reach out beforehand. After sending a message of thanks, he received no reply and suspects it may have been sent to the wrong number. “It’s not like Jon to not respond. He’s super responsible like that. So if you’re reading this, Jon, DM me your new number!” Sheen pleaded.

With a memoir, a documentary, and fresh honesty about his past, Charlie Sheen appears ready to reintroduce himself to the world — not as a headline-making spectacle, but as a man embracing accountability and growth.
