Police have arrested a 53-year-old businesswoman from Mbarara City for allegedly defrauding an unnamed Member of Parliament of Shs60 million after falsely claiming to be an official from the Office of the President.
The suspect, identified as Hope Tumwebaze, was arrested in Kampala following investigations into allegations that she impersonated a government official to obtain money from the legislator.
Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said Tumwebaze allegedly posed as an official attached to the Office of the President and convinced the MP that she could facilitate the delivery of government services to the legislator's constituency.
According to police, the alleged fraud occurred between June last year and the months that followed. Investigators say Tumwebaze met the MP on several occasions at different locations in Kampala, where she allegedly made the false representations and received a total of Shs60 million.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the affected legislator, citing ongoing investigations.
Tumwebaze remains in police custody as investigations continue. If charged, she will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations in court, where the prosecution will be required to prove its case. She is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
