JOHANNESBURG - The African Union could be left with no choice but to unilaterally intervene in Burundi to protect the lives of citizens as the security situation worsens.
This follows President Pierre Nkurunziza?s rejection of the AU?s proposal to deploy a 5,000-strong peacekeeping mission there.
Violence has claimed hundreds of lives in Burundi following Nkurunziza?s disputed third term and more than 200,000 people have fled the country.
South Africa is the leader of the multinational African intervention standby force at the moment.
This means its troops could be deployed at any time, if the African Union gives the go ahead.
The question is -- are they ready?
