Burigi National Park Set To Add More On Tanzania's Splendid Tourist Attractions

By Special Correspondent, Johannesburgh, S.A

TANZANIA’S tourism industry is very significant to the country's
economy, as it contributes to about 17.6 per cent of the country's
nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP), currently estimated at US$59
billion, up from US$57.44 billion in 2018. See (/tradingeconomics.com/tanzania/gdp>).

In fact, tourism is currently Tanzania’s leading industry in terms of
foreign exchange earnings and it employs 6,000 Tanzanians in
direct jobs, it has also created over two million indirect jobs out of
the country’s rated total workforce of 26.3 million in 2017.

In 2018, a total of 1.49 million tourists came to Tanzania, generating
US$2.43 billion for the country – up from the US$2.17 billion
generated in year-2017 when the country hosted 1.33 million tourist
arrivals.

In this regard, tourism is generally acknowledged as being important
for the Tanzanian economy. That is.

This explains why efforts the Fifth-Phase
Government under the able leadership of His Excellency Dr. John Pombe
Magufuli to promote Tanzanian
tourism are commendable in attracting foreign currencies.

The Burigi-Chato National Park is one such new attraction and effort. This, upon its inaugaration by President Magufuli on Tuesday is set to be among
Tanzania's famous National Parks for wildlife.

The Park is situated
close to Lake Victoria, on the border with the Rwanda Republic, and is
surrounded by the wonderous waters of the Kagera River and Lake Burigi.

The National Park, a large part of which is in the Kagera Region, with
the rest in the newly-created Geita Region– was created by the Government in the 1970s as a Game Reserve and in May, 2018 promoted together with other 5 to form National Parks.

The Burigi-Chato National Park is a typical grasslands area of the
African Savannah. It is set among the pictorial beauty of the lakes
and the riverside which is a delight for the eyes of tourists who
appreciate Mother Nature and Father Time.

It is home to a wide collection of wildlife, including the African
elephant, buffaloes (‘Buffs’), antelopes, lions, leopards, zebras,
giraffes, chimpanzees (‘Chimps’) and gorillas.

Some rare species of birds are also found in the Burigi-Biharamulo,
Kimisi, Ibanda and Rumanyika National Parks, including fish eagles
(Scientific name: ‘Haliaeetus vocifer’), papyrus ganolek (‘Laniarius
mufumbiri’), and the somewhat bizarre shoebill stork (‘Balaeniceps
rex’).

Moreover, one of the special features about the wildlife of these
National Parks is that one of the world’s largest antelopes, the
statuesque Cape eland (‘Taurotragus oryx’) is also found here.

Not only that, the Burigi-Chato National Park also shares the
ecosystems of the ‘Rwanda Akagera National Park,’ and Uganda's Kikati
Game Reserve, which are rangeland areas to the north of the Katungo
River and the Lake Mburo National Park.

Burigi-Chato also extends in the eastern side towards the Kimisi,
Burigi-Biharamulo, Ibanda and Rumanyika National Park Tanzania – as well as to the Akagera National Park #Rwanda in the west.

"The newly promoted National Parks will open up a new tourism circuit in the North Western parts of and Lake Zone of Tanzania," said Minister of Tourim, Dr. Hamis Kigangwalla recently.

I have been questioning my self why the name Burigi-Chato and not Burigi-Muleba or Burigi-Biharmulo?

That is the question everyone who know the geography of Burigi is asking why that added name Chato. Chato does not relate with Burigi. Buring is within two three districts Biharamulo, Muleba and Karagwe and not Chato
