Foresenic officers by the mosque in Walsall following the discovery of a suspicious item
Bomb disposal experts were called to the Aisha Mosque and Islamic Centre in Walsall, West Midlands, after a member of the public found a package and took it inside.
West Midlands Police confirmed last night the package had contained a small home-made explosive device, which officers had made safe.
Superintendent Keith Fraser told reporters: “The Force is taking this extremely seriously. The incident is being treated as a hate crime, although the motive for placing the item near to the mosque remains unclear.”

About 40 homes around the mosque were evacuated with 80 people given overnight shelter by the local authority, while 70 residents stayed with friends or family.
Police said the evacuation was taken as a “precautionary measure” and residents were allowed back into their homes yesterday.
