Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has endorsed Ambassador Olara Otunnu’s bid for United Nations Secretary-General.

Kyagulanyi praised Otunnu’s long diplomatic career and his work on human rights, justice and children affected by armed conflict. He also recalled that the Museveni government previously blocked Otunnu’s earlier bid for the same position after he criticised alleged atrocities committed by the regime.
Despite acknowledging public skepticism over the government’s current support for Otunnu, Kyagulanyi said he trusts Otunnu’s integrity and urged him not to ignore Uganda’s own struggles for freedom and human rights if elected.
Olara Otunnu
Otunnu, a former Ugandan UN ambassador and Foreign Minister, has made UN reform, conflict resolution, climate action and responsible artificial intelligence governance key themes of his campaign.
Uganda nominated Otunnu in July 2026 to succeed António Guterres. Early informal Security Council straw polls have shown him gaining ground after a weaker first round, as he continues diplomatic outreach to UN member states and Security Council powers.
