Uganda’s roads have continued to claim lives at an alarming rate, leaving behind a serious public safety crisis.
According to reports by the Uganda Traffic Police, these accidents have been attributed to reckless overspeeding and overtaking, Human error and reckless driving behaviours, poor Vehicle conditions, Poor roads and other environmental factors.
All these factors have left many Ugandans nursing wounds and others losing loved ones.
Recent Road accidents.
22nd October 2025, 46 People died along Kampala Gulu Highway
27th December 2025, A family of 7 died along the Masaka Mbarara Highway
13th February 2026, Eight(8) died on Mbarara Lyantonde highway
8th February 2026, Eight People died along Mityana Mubende highway.
Call to Action
Uganda Traffic police must up their game and come to the forefront to stop this crisis. Relaunch the #Operationfikasalama program, which involves establishing effective permanent checkpoints along different routes to tackle reckless driving, overspeeding and poorly maintained vehicles.
The Express Penalty system that was sent for review in 2025 should now be brought back into action. It would automatically detect traffic violations and issue electronic fines to the drivers.
Ministry of Works and Transport should ensure roads are user-friendly and wide enough to stop accidents from occurring.
